Summary:

This training day is offered to Headteachers, SENCOs, Teachers and Teaching Assistants in the primary sector. Increasing numbers of children are being diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders or have some characteristics without a formal diagnosis. Most teachers and support staff come into contact with such pupils and will want to feel they have confidence in knowing how best to work with and support them. This course will explore ASD in the classroom (YR - Y6). Effective support for pupils with ASD needs to be comprehensive and well developed, taking into account the individual needs of the pupil.

Intended Outcomes

Course participants will gain:

  • Understanding of the needs of children with autistic spectrum disorders;
  • Increased understanding of how the needs of pupils with ASD impact in the classroom together with information regarding common social and behavioural difficulties;
  • Effective practical strategies to support children with ASD using case studies and drawing on the experiences of participants;
  • An overview of the role of staff in the school.
